Precision Ag: Japan

Japanese agriculture mostly grows high value crops. And water is a resource shared on a small surface by many people, a world class industry, and a mostly irrigated agriculture. As a result of this Precision Agriculture in Japan has different accents than in the Midwest: focus on quality, and focus on the environment. P.A. in Japan started later than in the US, but has caught up, in its own way. Biggest achievements can be found in the area of quality control and robotization in fruit and vegetable packing plants, fertility management for quality and ecological concerns rather than for volume, and integrated databases where farmers and suppliers cooperate to optimize results at local and regional level, while maximizing income of the individual farmer.
